One of these camps was established at the U.S. Army’s training installation Camp Cooke on June 16, 1944. The POW base camp at Cooke operated sixteen branch camps in six of California’s fifty-eight counties and is today the site of Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County.

Peyton Henry Canary III, age 94, passed away October 17, 2020 in Cedar City, Utah. He was born in Washington, Indiana on April 12, 1926 to James Monroe Canary and Marguerite Branson Canary. He attended three high schools during his four years and graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1943.
- Once a boys and girls camp, Camp Mountain Lake Retreat has a colorful history. In 1946 Colonel Reynolds established the camp as a summer camp for boys. The cabins were "rescued" from a shipment that was bound for the Philippians, but WWII ended. They went to good use housing young men who learned to hunt, fish, horseback ride and sail on the lake.
On 14 Oct. 1943 the squadron arrived at NAAS Camp Kearney, San Diego, CA. for training of new crews for a second tour with a new addition of the PB4Y-2 Consolidated's Privateer. On the second week of August 1944, the squadron was deployed to Eniwetok Atoll to fly long range patrols for the invasion of Saipan and Tinian.
