Its designation was/is JP-7. I still maintain an active interest in most aviation related feilds and this is the first time I've ever heard of JP-8. It may be that JP-8 is fairly common and I am very uninformed. New engines, stealth technology etc. probably will require new fuels.

- JP-8 is Jet A with additives (NATO F-40). So yes as the fuel component of model airplane diesel fuel JP-8 will work. Like Ed said you need to add the other components such as Ether (winter starting fluid - obtainable at the base gas station in northern climates, not readily available in hot climates) and oil.
It also doesn't lubricate as well as conventional diesel (again, similar to kerosene). A MILSPEC was developed for jp8 in 1990 stating that it was a suitable replacement for all diesel fuel in vehicles. While the other guy is right about multifuel engines, those aren't in every military truck you see.
